چکیده

We report the results of spectral and morphological studies of X-ray data from the supernova remnant (SNR) W44. Spectral analysis of archival data from the Einstein Observatory, ROSAT, and Ginga, covering a total energy range from 0.3 to 8 keV, indicates that the SNR can be described well by a nonequilibrium ionization (NEI) model with temperature ∼0.9 keV and ionization timescale of order 6000 cm years. All elemental abundances are found to be within about a factor of two of their cosmic values, with iron possibly appearing to show significant depletion. No clear evidence for emission from supernova ejecta can be inferred from the observed metal abundances. The column density toward the SNR is high – around 10 atoms cm – as expected given the location of the remnant in the Galactic plane. In addition to the spectral analysis, we have investigated two different evolutionary scenarios to explain the centrally-brightened X-ray morphology of the remnant: (1) a model involving the slow thermal evaporation of clouds engulfed by the supernova blast wave as it propagates though a clumpy interstellar medium (ISM) (White & Long 1991, hereafter WL), and (2) a hydrodynamical simulation of a blast wave propagating through a homogeneous ISM, including the effects of radiative cooling. Both models can have their respective parameters tuned to reproduce approximately the morphology of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, 60 Garden Street, Cambridge MA 02138 Department of Physics, Columbia University, 550 W 120 Street, New York, NY 10027 Department of Physics and Astronomy, Rutgers University, P.O. We report on the Chandra observations of the archetypical mixed morphology (or thermal composite) supernova remnant, W44. As with other mixed morphology remnants, W44's projected center is bright in thermal X-rays. It has an obvious radio shell, but no discernable X-ray shell. In addition, X-ray bright 'knots' dot W44's image. The spectral analysis of the Chandra data show that the remnant's ho...

An X-ray Study of the Supernova Remnant G290.1–0.8

G290.1–0.8 (MSH 11–61A) is a supernova remnant (SNR) whose X-ray morphology is centrally bright. However, unlike the class of X-ray composite SNRs whose centers are dominated by nonthermal emission, presumably driven by a central pulsar, we show that the X-ray emission from G290.1–0.8 is thermal in nature, placing the remnant in an emerging class which includes such remnants as W44, W28, 3C391,...

View of DA 530 : A Sub - energetic Supernova Remnant with a Pulsar Wind Nebula ?

DA 530 (G93.3+6.9) is a high Galactic latitude supernova remnant with a well-defined shell-like radio morphology and an exceptionally low X-ray to radio luminosity ratio. Based on a Chandra ACIS observation, we report the detection of an extended X-ray feature close to the center of the remnant with 5.3σ above the background within a circle of 20 radius. The spectrum of this feature can be char...

OH (1720 MHz) MASERS AND MIXED-MORPHOLOGY SUPERNOVA REMNANTS

Radio surveys of supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Galaxy have uncovered 19 SNRs accompanied by OH maser emission at 1720 MHz. This unusual class of maser sources is suggested to be produced behind a shock front from the expansion of a supernova remnant running into a molecular cloud. An important ingredient of this model is that X-ray emission from the remnant enhances the production of OH mole...
